"Binny" - this was what Rav Binyamin Zev Kahane was called by his
family and close friends. A son born into the holy family of Rabbi Meir
Kahane . From infancy, he absorbed the sense of dedication and
self-sacrifice of his father and the rest of his family. In his
childhood, he experienced his father's, and the Jewish Defense
League's, struggle to break open the Iron Curtain and free Soviet Jews
from Soviet oppression. Within all of this, he learned that when a Jew
is in danger, one must leave his home and do something. For "all Israel
are guarantors"... and, "the debasement of Israel is a desecretion of
G-d's name". No slogans were heard in the home where he grew up, that
didn't translate into a way of life for him.
After years of activism dedicated to helping American Jews, subject to
antisemitic incitement, stand proud and tall, the slogan characterizing
the life of his father - "Never Again!" - was instilled in the young
boy. A holy flame was burning, which would forever seek to extinguish
any fear or appearance of the Exile or the Holocaust.
ARISE AND GO UP TO ZION
For many long years,
Rabbi Meir Kahane had been shouting out that a Jew has nothing to look for in the Galut, with the cry: "If you don't eliminate the Exile, the Exile will eliminate you". When Binyamin was 4 years old, his family left the Exile and set off for Zion. Their Jerusalem home was the address for the needy and the struggling, and Binyamin saw this and internalized: One must help a Jew oppressed by goyim, and just as importantly, give a heater to widows and orphans, and support a Jew having problems. Here in Israel, the Jewish Defense League became the "Kach" movement, the standard bearer of the struggle to settle Israel in all of its wide expanses, and for rooting out the Arab enemy wherever he is. Even then, 30 years ago, his father was saying, "Israeli Arabs are a time bomb". About a month and a half ago, the Rabbi's son was convicted by the High Court of incitement because of a flyer he distributed about a decade ago, which called for, nay, demanded: "Bomb Um El Fachm". Um El Fachm, whose inhabitants - Israeli Arabs - shouted out to Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War: "Ya Saddam, Ya Chaviv, odrov, odrov Tel Aviv" (Saddam, beloved, wipe out Tel Aviv).
Rabbi Kahane foresaw their shouts of happiness over the bombing of Tel Aviv, 30 years ago. Ten years ago, Rabbi Binyamin saw their enmity and hatred and the open cooperation of those "citizens of Israel" with the Iraqi foe. These days, as all of Am Israel open their eyes to the center of the country being taken over by "Israeli Arabs", in pogroms and murderous acts - the High Court, sitting in its ivory tower, was blind, and blind it remains.
IN THE CAMP OF TORAH - EXCELLENT AND MODEST
Consistency and diligence in Torah study were instilled in young Binyamin by his father,
Rabbi Kahane , who even during the turbulent times of activism and persecution by the authorities, didn't lose his nights in sleep. From the morning watch until the late afternoon, the Rabbi sat over his Talmud and his writings and interpretations of the Torah, and the rest of his writings. In the yeshiva, Binyamin was known for his quietness and for his outstanding perseverance in preparing himself for his studies at the famous "Mercaz HaRav" yeshiva. There, in a corner of the women's gallery, far from the din of the Beit Midrash, he pored over his Talmud. During this time, young Binyamin would store up the powerful strength that he would need in the future. Occupation with mundane matters was not his lot in life, and even his visits to the yeshiva's dining room were short and to the point, only just what he needed to sustain himself. Utmost modesty and gentility with every word he spoke and with every movement he made, and all who met with him were lovingly drawn to him.
THE YESHIVA OF "THE JEWISH IDEA"
There, on the benches of the women's gallery, the idea which would bring to fruition the dream of
Rabbi Meir Kahane , took shape: To set up a yeshiva and educate a whole generation on the Torah of his father. Rabbi Binyamin says, and acts. In the beginning, a Parsha-of-the-Week sheet was published, with its first name, "Kach hi Darka shel Torah" (This is the Way of the Torah), containing messages of Jewish pride and power, charity, dedication and trust in Hashem, and with the signature of "The Yeshiva of The Jewish Idea", even though this existed at the time, only in the chevruta in the Mercaz HaRav's women's gallery. From that point on, many days were dedicated to selection of students, choosing a Rosh Yeshiva and rabbis. In the month of Elul of 5747, the plan was put into action - the Yeshiva of The Jewish Idea was founded. In this Beit Midrash, too, Rabbi Binyamin stood out for his modesty, but his gentility attracted to him students who wanted to learn with him, to consult with him, or just to bask in his aura. Rabbi Binyamin dedicated these days both to his own personal development, and to strengthening and establishing the yeshiva that he founded when he was only 21 years of age. During this time, Rabbi Binyamin met Talia. Talia was a shepherd's daughter; she grew up in the wide-open country of the Galilee, absorbing the intensity and softness of its green hills into her personality, as well as her father's character, tending his sheep with compassion and mercy, wrapped in tefillin and holiness. Talia's family background completed the mosaic of the young
Kahane family, in being deeply rooted to the land, in love of Torah, in grace and in the gentility of holiness.
THE MURDER OF HIS FATHER - SHOCK, AND THE TIME TO ACT FOR HASHEM
The murder of
Rabbi Meir Kahane was a blow and a shock to Israeli society, especially to
Rabbi Kahane's students and activists. When the leader was lost, there came, naturally, confusion over the path to follow, as well as who was to constitute the leadership. At that time, Rabbi Binyamin managed to overcome his natural traits of humility and keeping quiet, which characterized his personality. At a time of acting for Hashem, he turned onto the path of leadership in the Samarian settlement of Tapuach, by holding rallies in the cities and neighborhoods, following in his father's footsteps. The authorities, who profited from the murder of
Rabbi Meir Kahane HY"D , were stunned by his image, his personality and the inner strength that emanated from his son as he continued on his father's path. Here began a whole series of persecutions which would have put the darkest of totalitarian regimes to shame. These persecutions included an infinite number of indictments for incitement, rebellion, "arousing contention" and the like. Whoever stood in the courtroom and saw his thin, quiet persona standing before the Ministry of Law's lawyers, could not understand how someone could be persecuted for his views. What could this man have done, and his few followers, to cause the Ministry of Law to lose sleep in being so anxious to put him behind bars?
TALIA - THE OFFICE, THE SECRETARY, THE COOK, THE POWER AND THE STRENGTH
The authorities' actions "bore fruit", and Rabbi Binyamin was sent to jail for a long term of imprisonment. During this time, as the leader's freedom was denied him, his voice was not stilled. Talia, with him by his side in the task of raising and educating their children, cooked for the yeshiva students, standing before the activists and followers, sending out books, typing material, filling envelopes with "Darka shel Torah" and stamping them, making sure that they were sent and would get to anyone requesting it, to each and every location requesting it. Their home was the office, the center of activism and activists, all of this without harming, in any way, the raising of this glorious family with the character traits of gentility of ways and softness of character. While her husband sat in jail, she took up his various jobs, too. The whole truth must be heard; the persecutors knew that the body can be imprisoned, but not the spirit. Talia took upon herself the responsibility of arranging for the publication of "Darka shel Torah", of running to the printer, getting the money, taking care of the yeshiva's needs, and all of this, by the way, in a natural way, without asking for any kind of help.
WHY THEY PERSECUTED HIM
He exposed them, time after time, in all of their nakedness. The corrupt legal system, corrupted by anti-Jewish values, which seeks to change Israel into a democratic state, but without any sign of Jewishness. The Israeli leaders' tendency towards Hellenization. The lie of the nationalism of the parties on the Right, who don't recognize the concept of "trust in G-d", and so the results of their policies are no different than those which are called "leftist". The helplessness of the Israeli police and security forces, who can't find a way to wipe out the enemy. The failure of the decaying educational system, producing aimless youth with no purpose in life. Editions of "Darka shel Torah", which have been bringing a breath of fresh air to synagogues around the country, were his device for spreading his ideology. In this way, he sought to plant the seeds of a revolution which he awaited. The authorities understood that as long as he would speak and his voice would be heard, that their corrupt regime, which was leading Am Israel to the lower depths of Hell, would be in danger. And so they worked in every way to silence him. About a month ago, "The Institute of the Jewish Idea", a modest little place in the center of Jerusalem where those who sought Torah from his mouth gathered, was closed down. On the door of the Institute, the police, under court order and orders of the legal advisor, tacked a sign: "This place has been closed in accordance with the order to prevent terrorist activity". Terror, yes, terror. Evidently the Israeli police have finished their work with the terrorists: Tibi, Arafat, Dahlan, Rajoub and the rest of the murderers, YM"S, and there's nothing left for them to do except to fight, in that miserable little room, Jews who learn Torah. It should be noted that since the place was closed, Rabbi Binyamin hastened to find an alternative location, one which the authorities would neve succeed in closing.
TAKE YOUR FATE IN YOUR HANDS - THE LAST MESSAGE
The last message that Rabbi Binyamin sought to convey before he was murdered by agents of those who sold guns and ammunition to the enemy: "Take your fate into your own hands". With this moving message, he went to his brothers in the Yesha settlements, to try to convince them not to rely on the perplexed and confused IDF - the army that, in response to the murder of Jews, moves a hill from one place to another; the army that begs the murderer Jibril Rajoub to save its soldiers from Joseph's Tomb; the army that, in response to gunfire from the enemy, retreats from Joseph's Tomb. He turned to people of the Shomron hills and said, let's not rely on anyone but ourselves, so that the scenario of the Holocaust doesn't return, otherwise we'll find ourselves in a "creeping Holocaust". Among other things, he wrote: "...we'll come to the IDF with this message: ... 'If you left Joseph's Tomb in Schem - please leave us, too...' We have to say this nicely, logically. 'You really don't want to be here anyway. You don't have any other grand purpose here other than the idiotic goal of 'keeping order'... Baruch Hashem, we have here in the Samarian hills, young people and trained military men, they'll happily take up the responsibility, with a high morale, and, finally, with real enthusiasm, and especially - with trust in Hashem, Who gave us this land..'" Rabbi Binyamin also warned of the trouble brewing on the roads, claiming that "we have nothing to lose". He also claimed that if the IDF does not accept this, let it at least understand that no one relies upon it, and that therefore it will have to take extraordinary measures to prove to the settlers that it is indeed defending them. *He wrote: "...We can only imagine the uproar that will arise among so many Jews, "secular" and "religious", in Israel and outside of it, when they hear this bombastic new idea! For a long time now, we have forgotten this deep and encompassing feeling of Jewish pride".
THEIR VOICES FELL SILENT
The warning that disaster was on the way, came true with an intensity that we could not imagine in our worst nightmares. The morning of Sunday, 5 Tevet, the
Kahane family was returning from Jerusalem to their home in Tapuach. They dropped off their son first at the Beit El Talmud Torah. Father, mother and 5 daughters continued on their way. Near the settlement of Ofra, their car was attacked by three enemy fighters, YM"S, and 60 bullets were fired at the car. These bullets, given away in the Oslo agreement, mortally wounded the father and mother, who met their deaths in the presence of their young daughters, who were also hurt. Pain and sorrow overcome us, not because the parents fall in war (for in a war, your army makes an effort to destroy the enemy), but that here, the army hands over weapons to the enemy and carries out "security coordination" with them. The delusion of peace of Rabin, Peres, Barak, Ben Ami and the rest of the Oslo gang of criminals, has added six more orphans to the list, who will never again know their parents' love, whose home came crashing down around them, so tender and needy of their father and mother. The baby Shlomzion, 2 months old, awaits the warmth of her mother and her nourishment, both of which perished from the bullets of "peace".
MASHIACH BEN YOSEF
In the place where the couple were slaughtered, blood-stained Parshat Hashavua sheets were found scattered about, that Rabbi Binyamin had wanted to send that day, to distribute them as he did every two weeks. On the last page, he deals with the same topic that his father dealt with in his last class at the Yeshiva before he was murdered - the same topic with which
Rabbi Kahane finished
his book, "Or HaRa'ayon" . Mashiach ben Yosef - the same Mashiach ben Yosef whose brothers did not recognize him, the Mashiach ben Yosef who deals with the birthpangs of the Redemption as a preparation for Mashiach ben David who follows in his footsteps, the Mashiach ben Yosef who was killed in sin.
